• 10 locations

Amazon.com: Transworld Surf was developed by Angel Studios, a game shop known for creating visually stunning outdoor environments. Thus, it's no surprise that this extreme surfing game excels graphically. The waves are realistic and detailed, and make extensive use of the Xbox's lighting and bump-mapping capabilities. All 10 of the game's locations have a distinct look that properly reflects the conditions in each area. Also lifelike are the player models and animations. The sound effects aren't nearly as remarkable as the graphics, but the music is great. The diverse soundtrack features tracks from Nebula, Dr. Onionskin, Cali Agents, Anti-Flag, and Sum 41. Best of all, players can program their own soundtrack from the Xbox hard drive.

Game modes include free surf, single session, multiplayer, and pro tour. The first three modes are self-explanatory, while the last consists of objective-based levels and competitions with the pros. Although the controls are responsive, timing tricks and combos is initially difficult. Unlike in skateboarding and BMX games, the player has to master each trick's timing while worrying about a constantly moving environment. While it may be too daunting for beginners, this is a deep and rewarding game that's a joy to behold. It's to surfing games what Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is to skateboarding games. --Raymond M. Padilla

Pros:
Amazing graphics
Responsive controls
Good variety of surfers, beaches, and music tracks

Cons:
Relatively steep learning curve
Hackneyed level objectives
Middling sound effects

Good with only a few flaws, August 29, 2002

This is a pretty good game with only a few flaws. I would recomend it. It is fun, challenging, but not way to hard. The only bad thing is the annoying sound.

As close as I will ever get to surfing, January 30, 2002

I have never played a surfing game before, but I took a chance with this one based upon the good reviews here. I can definitely say that this one is worth the money!

As other current generation games, Transworld Surf takes advantage of the ability to create very realistic water effects. Of the water games that I have seen (Spyhunter for PS2, Splashdown for PS2), this one definitely is in the running for most realistic in its presentation.

The levels are very challenging and appear to increase in difficulty as one moves through the game. Some of the level objectives are a bit frustrating, but usually there are enough objectives to allow the player to "switch gears" if the frustration level gets too high. And if the objectives get old, one can always free surf and practice the tricks that become necessary in later levels.

As with other games that award points based on tricks during a run, maximum scores occur when one puts as much variation into the run as possible. This may be the cause of some of the frustration surrounding this game's learning curve. I have found that concentrating on a few easy tricks first (floaters, board grabs, cutbacks and barrel rides) allowed me to become proficient enough to begin to move on to tricks of medium difficulty. I was able to become relatively proficient over the course of about 4 hours of gameplay.

But the difficulty coupled with the exhilarating graphics and my quest for the "perfect run" has made this game one of the best that I have played in some time.

THIS GAME IS A MUST HAVE!!!, January 27, 2002

This game blows all other surfing games out of the water, whether you surf or not this game is sweet. The only other surfing game that (comes close) to Transworld Surf is Sunny Garcia Pro surfer for playstation 2. Transworld Surf has great graphics, the best surf spots and the reef girls what more could you ask for in a surfing game?

A Pleasant Surprise, January 24, 2002

To say I was skeptical about spending $... on a surfing game would be the understatement of the year. However, the good buzz around the game gave me the confidence I needed to give it a try and I am happy that I did so. Transworld Surf is not an easy game to pick up in the first couple of hours, but enough patience and effort will pay off in a rewarding game experience. Some of the goals connected to the Career Mode could have been left out, yet it does add another dimension to the overall gameplay and helps you practice certain tricks/moves. The graphics are exceptional and the difficulty of progressing in Career Mode is a welcomed challenge. The multiplayer games are also fun, except for the tricky King of the Wave. Forget about the snowboarding and skateboarding games, this is the one you need if you want to have a so-called "extreme" sports game. I rated it 4 stars, but my actual rating- if possible- would be 4 1/2 stars. It is that good and it is that fun.

The best surfing game ever!, December 27, 2001
Reviewer: Speedy Petey from Chicago, Illinois
I've never surfed but i expect that this game is just like real surfing. The physics and everything are just like in real life. This is also very hard because as i said its just like real life. I've been trying to land a kickflip all day and i just cant do it! (as i said i've never surfed and i dont know actually the timing of everything so for me its very difficult.

So if your not afraid of a game that is hard youll like this game.

Fun - I play this game more than any other, December 23, 2001

I'm not a surfer but do like water sports etc. I like games like Tony Hawk. This surfing game is really fun; i don't judge games like everyone else re: to Halo etc, but if i sit down and just enjoy playing a game a lot, then it is a good game. I could tell you about the music or if it is close to real surfing or not (but really who cares) because my point is that for [the money] I'm probably getting my money's worth because i keep playing and enjoy it. i think the graphics are really good; for me this is a game i'm glad i bought and i'm not planning on even trading it in, for me it'll become a classic i keep there with THPS

best surfing game ever made, December 17, 2001
Reviewer: A gamer from Telluride, CO United States
This game would get 5 stars, but the objectives (free the dolphins from the tuna nets, scare the birds away, (...)) you must fulfill in order to continue unlocking new breaks are time consuming, boring, and just plain lame. Other than that, the game play rocks. One longboard for some walking the nose would have been sweet, as well as more surfability on or near the lip (which is probably the most dynamic part of a wave) would have been great, too. As is, get too close to the lip and you "wipeout". The controls are great, and the physics are excellent. the best video game wave ever. EVER! A cheat code to unlock all the breaks would be cool. I find I just like "surfing", and I could take or leave the pro tour mode. Overall, I've been hooked on this game, and can't put it down. Good soundtrack with some progressive music. Steep learning curve; get your combos down if you want to score any points... (...)
