Amazon.com: Sports fans with little interest in video basketball games may want to rethink their stance after getting a look at Sega Sports' NBA 2K3. They--not to mention hardcore basketball simulation enthusiasts--will likely find it hard to keep from being drawn in by the game's picture-perfect detail, engrossing realism, and challenging gameplay.

Like NFL 2K3, NBA 2K3 is presented in the patented ESPN style. The game has all the sights and sounds of the NBA: the pomp and circumstance of pregame introductions, accurate arena recreations, realistic player animations and sizes, and fluid dribbling and shooting (including crossover moves and the ability to change shot direction in midair). All of this is accentuated with special touches such as alley-oops, tipped shots, the ability to make passes on the fly, fierce rebounding battles under the basket, and the added drama and excitement of the ball bouncing off the rim before it either falls in or goes awry.

NBA 2K3 offers a host of moves and modes on either side of the ball with 25 offensive and 10 defensive plays from which to choose. Throw in fully customizable strategy options--everything from player clutch factor to computer shot tendencies, not to mention all types of shot percentages and fouls--and it's easy to create the ideal match up and game environment. The limitless roster manager feature also ensures that league and franchise modes won't get stale.

Street mode offers a break from the grind of NBA play, allowing you to go two-on-two or all the way up to five-on-five in nine playgrounds and gyms. Pick your favorite players from current teams or choose greats from the '50s through the '80s and go at it as the Ballers vs. the Ringers. Street even features requisite trash talk such as "Yeah! You like that?" and grunts backed with "Get some!" --Larry White

Pros:
Accurate, eye-catching graphic representation
Challenging artificial intelligence
Realistic gameplay

Cons:
Blocky player movements
Players celebrate with fans after key shots
Lob quality of passes
Note: This review refers to the PlayStation2 version of this game.

Manufacturer's Description: NBA 2K3 powers forward with the kind of improvement that only results from a dedication to perfection. Imagine jump shots so real players actually adjust their movement in midair based on distance from the hoop and defensive pressure; a passing touch that gives you the control to skirt a defender or start a fast break; and dribble moves that let you jab left, rock right, crossover, and spin. It all happens in NBA 2K3. No other game delivers the physical element of basketball like this. The game offers accurate impact from collisions, especially hard fouls and authoritative dunks; shot blocking with emphasis on precise hand-to-ball contact; and the ability to lunge for the loose ball, even if it means ending up on some celebrity's lap. With commentators that analyze strategy, cut scenes portraying lifelike player interaction, uniforms that move like real fabric, and a brand new ESPN broadcast system that wraps it all together, NBA 2K3 provides the complete NBA experience.

Don't believe the hype., November 6, 2002

The reason i bought this game was beause of all the great reviews from here and game web sites. All i hear was it's the best B-ball sim out there. Well that's a bunch of BS. I don't know how many times playing as kobe, Shaq, Iverson etc.. i've gotten my shot blocked (even on fade aways) by a bench player. As shaq i get a miss match with a 6foot guard so i try backing him down and well i can't. It seems shaq isn't strong enough to plow his way through a 6 footer lol. And when i make him spin to the basket then press shoot 9 times out of 10 he doesn't go for the dunk instead he throws up some off balance, fade away crazy looking shot. The gameplay is challenging but not in a good way. I guess i will try "NBA Live".

'Live' is Dead..., October 29, 2002

Here it is: NBA 2K (the series) has been the best B-Ball action on the market since it debuted on the Dreamcast. Trust me - as a basketball fan, and owner of both series' titles - 'Live' has just run its course. Not bad for a series that started way back in '94. But just as 'Live' was such a huge step ahead of its predecessors,... NBA 2K3 is way past the EA flagship... NBA Live (and Madden, for that matter) hasn't done annthing past changing the rosters/uniforms, beefing up the graphics a bit yearly, and adding a new feature here and there. EA, or someone else, will have to come from an entirely new and innovative angle to catch SEGA. ...Okay, now the game.

This game can be a bit too real at times. ...The juggling of passes when they're caught is a good idea in itself - and realistic - but it happens too often in this game. Also, players tend to stop to catch a pass rather than catching on the fly. It's not as bad as earlier versions, but not as flowing as last year's game. That's about all the gripes I have. ...The gameplay is phenomenal. The animation and realism - from the collisions to the dunking/rim-hanging... to the reaction after getting the ball ripped in traffic - nice. Diving out of bounds to try and keep the ball in play, altering your shot/layup/dunk in mid-air ...makes the game just too much fun - especially when playing with another player as opposed to the CPU. ... Rebounding has been drastically improved, and ...players actually play up to their real-life counterparts, when you're playing against them or simulating the game. If you're playing the Lakers, you know which 2 you need to constantly watch...

Gets Better & Better Every Year, October 16, 2002

I picked this up the day of release and it's the most played game I have right now. Game play is untouchable compared to the other fakes on the market. I'm an XBOX Beta Tester (user tag:whoSneXt) and besides NFL2k3 and MotoGP, this is the only game I play the majority of my time online. No Lagging, smooth gameplay and the best simulation basketball game yet. Abilty to alter shots in mid-air, cross over dribbles are better, pivot moves, fake passes, it's all here this go round. This is recommended highly to all of those who wasted thier time and money on the arcade style play of NBA Live. Not knocking Live, but 2k3 is more of a "real" play action "sim" game. Right now my record online isn't too good but it will be even better by the time Nov.15 comes and the rest of the country gets the chance to experience Xbox Live.

Pros:
Great Franchise Mode (even international players in free agent)
40 post moves
200 different dunks
110 offensive/defensive plays
Street courts are back
Online roster updates
online player upgrade (hair, shoes)

Cons:
whats up with the pass fumbling? No more long passes down court to get the shot off quickly. majority of the time they will fumble it around before they get the shot off

Good but not great, October 15, 2002

NBA 2K3 is a very good game. Graphics are awsome. Gameplay is way inproved. The only problem with the game is that the rosters are not very updated. There is no Yao Ming. Ohter than some minor eorss great game.

Once again Sega Sports/Visual Concepts delivers with NBA 2K3! Graphics are outstanding, the players are so detailed that they even sweat as the game progress, the Gameplay/AI was definetly improved, and with DOLBY 5.1 the sound is very crisp. With XBOX Live, NBA 2K3 slams the competition!

its fun, but incredibly easy, October 11, 2002
Reviewer: A gamer from NY
this is waaaaay too easy, ive had it for about 3 days and already im blowing out every opponent in my franchise with Atlanta. The revolutionary game play works both ways, it is incredibly easy to anticipate passes and fill the pase lane for steals and STILL(this has been a problem since NBA 2K) the computer goes for too many pump fakes. the graphics are great though but its too easy.

Get out the way Live..., October 9, 2002

WOW! This game has great graphics, great sound, and is jampacked with great gameplay! The franchise mode sticks out to me... its great and is complete with everything you need. Street is still there, but same the same courts are there. WHen playing street, you choose ur own players from any team! The weather can be changed and the time of day! The graphics are crazy nice!!! You can see sweat on them which determines the fatigue for each player. The sound is pretty good, Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound is key for good sound. So I say u get off the computer, run to any place that sells video games, and GET THIS GAME!!

I played this game and it's amazing., September 21, 2002
Reviewer: Sam from San Diego, CA
I played this game a couple of times. My cousin in one of the producers and he has an early version of this game. The gameplay pretty much is the same as last year, however, the graphics are not. The graphics have been improved in many ways, the faces of the payers, the animations, the commentary, and more! Unlike NBA Live 2003, NBA 2K3 has become the best basketball game right now. EA Sports is going down the drain because Sega Sports are listening to their fans and doing what their fans want, which is better gameplay and better graphics. In other words, if you liked NBA 2K2, you will definitely will like 2K3. NBA 2K3 is worth buying it, you won't be dissapointed, I guarantee it!

NBA 2K3's definitely gonna be awesome, September 3, 2002
Reviewer: Emeka from Kilgore, TX USA
NBA 2K2 was considered ahead of it's time. NBA 2K3 is really gonna be awesome, it's gonna have Xbox LIVE enabled, and it just comes out right before Xbox life is launched in November. I highly recommend this game to NBA fans and every xbox owner as well. It's also gonna have the ESPN presentation that was tested for NFL 2K3 (it's really awesome too, you need to get it, IT'S OUT NOW!!!). It also have an advanced animation system

Advanced Animation System -- Players move naturally and appear more dynamic with increased facial detail and lifelike expressions. Visit the Sega sports website to see their review.
