From the Developer: Shenmue II is an epic adventure with all the elements of a great movie--drama, mystery, suspense, and action–-and offers a unique gameplay experience that seamlessly blends elements of action, adventure, fighting, and role-playing games. In Shenmue II, players assume the role of Ryo Hazuki, a young man dedicated to the task of tracking his father's murderer and unlocking the mysteries of the Phoenix Mirror. Shenmue II continues where Shenmue left off and brings Ryo to Hong Kong with many questions still unanswered as he follows the trail of Lan Di, the man who killed his father.

David Waters gave the best review of this game on the site. There is only one he didn't address and that is the graphics. I have never owned a Dream Cast, but I played the first Shenmue over my friend's house. I was amazed at the game. There was nothing like it at the time. I now own Shenmue 2 for Xbox, and I must say it is one my favorite games. My one and only complaint is that they didn't use the Xbox's hardware to its fullest. They just kinda enhanced the Dream Cast grapics. I mean, it looks way better than the Dream Cast, but Xbox is capable of more. Also, I have read reviews saying that if you haven't played the first one, then you probably won't like Shenmue 2. That is absolutely not true. Even if you never heard of it until now and you want a great action/adventure game, don't hesitate to buy this game. Great Review David.

A Great Game...For Fans of the First, November 11, 2002

I like many others bought a Dreamcast just for Shenmue I and II. After playing one I thought it was the game of the year because I myself had not played anything like it before. Then when dc was killed and Shenmue II wasn't comming to the States I felt depressed.

I bought Shenmue II about 2 days ago and I am not totally happy with what I had bought. Everything I love from the old game is still there, but not much more. Yes I do see a little improvment in graphics, but could probably be more. They did also add new mini games which are fun and gambling. The fight system and QTE's are what really keep me playing. Towards the end the game gets somewhat challenging, but it takes a lot of time to get there.

Overall this game will be one of my favorites for X box even though the graphics arent at full potential, the acting and voices can get annyoing, and takes a long time to do things. For people looking at this game, it will probably be tough to like the second with out playing the first even with the movie that comes with the game.

I have to admit this game is fun. Not only is there like a million things to do but the world is huge. If you are skeptikal on buying it because it might be too 'Boring' it isnt. it can get a bit tedious but in the end your still being awwed by the overal game quality. BUY IT!

Shenmue II is a groudbreaking video game. its like nothing ive ever seen or felt before. It has been my favorite game ever since part One came out on the dreamcast years ago. the graphics were broght over directly from dreamcast. so they arent as groundbreaking as the game itself. but its the story that sells this game. Its the type of game that pulls you in and wont let go. A deffinite must-have for the X-Box

Shenmue 2 not an improve, but still good!, November 9, 2002

First of all this game is so unique and good. Its basicly the same as the one on Dreamcast, but its very good game. Ok if you havent played 1 then you'll be lost. But don't worry,it has a movie and a short movie that will show you everything. It follows Ryo on his quest to Hong Hong. The gameplay is combined in many way. To mystery solving, Virtual Fighter Fightin, button sequences, an to mashing button action. It mostly feature in fighting style though. If you find youre self broke, you can find many part time jobs, then gamble youre money. OR you could sell everything you have got.Graphic wis...Well they have barely improved upon the Dreamcast wich was a disappointment, but loading is super fast. In short if you havent played Shenmue 2 and waant a good little RPG for youre Xbox, this one is it.

Shenmue Franchise is awesome, November 5, 2002

I am a big fan of The Shenmue franchise, but I have not played Shenmue II yet. The original game was ahead of its time and even now does not need much improvements. The second one was just recently released in US but I have been reading some bad reviews. Most people are dissing the graphics, saying it is like a Dreamcast game, so what. This game blows, the most stupid game I have ever plaed, Morrowind out of the water. This game has fighting and exploration, and you can also go to the arcade and play older Sega games. The games inlcude Afterburner II, Space Harrier, and you can play darts. The story of this game is great, you are a young man seeking revenge for his father's death. If you like and fighting or roaming RPG you will love Shenmue and Shenmue II.

Boring, November 5, 2002

Shenmue and its sequel are like having a real job...but even less fun. If tedious wandering and horrible dialogue are your forte, you might dig it. Everyone else: Save your money. Not even worth renting.

"Shenmue 2" is a direct sequel to the first game Shenmue fans will recall the first game ended with Ryo leaving Japan for China on a ship, leaving us all hanging desperately for the next chapter to see what happens next. Part 2 picks up as the boat is coming into port in Hong Kong which ties the two games together perfectly. In fact it feels like the two games are just one enormous game they come together so well. The same adventure/fighting/quick timer event style gameplay is back but improved on in every area. The locations are far larger and more diverse than those in the first game .

you can read about all the various good things I find in it in this beautiful game
1. Graphics are even better, especially the character animations. Hong-Kong and other Chinese cities are meticulously detailed, the size and the realistic feeling of the world is truly amazing

2. The movement of the main character (Ryo) is somewhat smoother than in the first game.

3. The game world is larger.

4. The dialogues last longer and vary more

One of the reasons why I bought an XBOX!, October 31, 2002

I played the first Shenmue over 2 years ago on the now dead Sega Dreamcast. I am convinced that Shenmue was the ONLY reason to own a Dreamcast and I anxiously awaited Shenmue II. But then Sega announced it would discontinue the DC and that eventually even Shenmue II was cancelled for US release (though Europe and Japan did get it). Luckily for us, Microsoft kindly picked this title up for it's XBOX and gave us US gamers hope that the series would continue on!

It was a long wait, but finally the definitive version of Shenmue II has arrived! XBOX owners truly benefit and to reward us for our wait and loyalty, Microsoft included a full length DVD movie of the first Shenmue game (awesome!!) and they went back and improved the game by improving the textures, adding voice dubbing (I hate subtitles) featuring the same voice actor who did Ryo's voice in Shenmue 1, and added hard drive support, faster load times, a rock-solid frame rate, and so much more! And it's all on ONE DVD disc! No need to swap discs during play like we were used to on the Dreamcast versions (the DC version of Shenmue consisted of FOUR discs!). Needless to say, Microsoft and Sega did a fantastic job making this the definitive version for the true Shenmue fan! They could have done a quick and dirty port and just called it a game, but they wisely chose to improve it!

The game is great...a strangely addictive mixture of Virtua Fighter-style fighting, 3D exploration/detective work, and some QTE events. The world you interact with is a true living/breathing world complete with clock and common people who follow schedules and daily patterns! It's so much fun just to walk around interacting with everyone and seeing how people react. This is as close to a virtual world as you'll find! The fight scenes are great and there are also full versions of classic Sega games like Hang on/AfterburnerII/Space Harrier!!

Whether you're a true fan or just looking for a great adventure with plenty to do, buy Shenmue II today. You will not regret your purchase!
